Maintaining a healthy balanced diet can be an easy task to some, but to others it is seen as demanding and unmanageable. The truth is, eating a balanced diet should be something you instinctively do. If you find yourself struggling to maintain the diet, then you should develop ways to keep yourself motivated and focused on the real goal, which is to live a healthy life. You should know that the effects of a bad diet are frightening. Today, we are going to give you some of the consequences of maintaining an unhealthy diet over a long period of time.

1. Obesity

Continuous consumption of unhealthy foods and drinks will eventually lead to weight gain. Whereas gaining weight is not a problem to some people, it becomes a very unpleasant situation when it turns into obesity. Obesity occurs when there is excess or abnormal fat in your body which puts your health at risk. At this stage, you are basically considered overweight. Obesity causes numerous diseases such as Kidney disease, heart disease, liver disease and even certain cancers. Such illnesses might eventually kill you if you keep on consuming the unhealthy foods. 


2. Diabetes

The risk of getting diabetes is almost inevitable if you continue with the unhealthy diet. It is mostly caused by large consumption of foods with saturated fats. What happens is, the amount of fat in your body increase and the insulin functionality decreases. This puts you at a very high risk of getting type-2 diabetes. If you aren’t aware, insulin is the hormone that assists in carrying glucose to the cells in your body. Diabetes makes the liver, fat and muscle cells less responsive to insulin. This is called insulin resistance, meaning that the glucose is unable to enter your body cells. With nowhere to go, glucose accumulates in your bloodstream leading to a condition called hyperglycemia which is highly connected with type-2 diabetes. Some of the effects of diabetes are; kidney and eye problems.

3. Brain function problems

Our brain requires glucose to perform some basic tasks such as; speech, concentration and thinking among others. If we deny the brain such nutrients, then we risk disrupting its functionality. Foods commonly needed to produce glucose are complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. They should therefore be included in your diet but please note that there are other types of foods rich in fat and carbohydrates but toxic to your body therefore you should ensure they are healthy.

4. Depression

Unhealthy eating can cause depression. Depression has been a major cause of suicide among many people. When you eat a lot of junk foods, sometimes you feel ashamed, especially if you were trying to maintain a healthy diet. This shame eventually leads to stress because you might crave more, this in turn causes depression. Depression may send you into a spree of unhealthy eating. Furthermore, Junk foods lack tryptophan since they have insufficient nutrients. Tryptophan is the amino acid which provides the brain with serotonin. Serotonin is usually changed into dopamine which is known as the “feel good’ hormone. According to research, lack of enough serotonin and dopamine leads to feelings of sadness, depression, anger and tension.
